Significance of Ugadi Festival 

Ugadi is the New Year festival celebrates primarily in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telegana. The word "Ugadi" comes from"Yuga"(age) and "Adi" (beginning) meaningthe beginning of a new era. It marks the first day of Chaitra month in the Hindu lunisolor calendar and usually falls in March or April.

Reason why Ugadi is celebrated

  • Ugadi marks the beginnning of New Year, signifying new beginnings, growth, and prosperity. 
  • Ugadi is an important time for reading the Panchanga(Hindu almanac) which predicts events for the coming year.
  • Ugadi is also linked to the harvesting of new crops, symbolizing abundance and prosperity 

Pooja Essentials for Ugadi Festival 

  • Kalash(Sacred pot)- It is filled with water and topped with mango leaves and a coconut which symbolizes prosperity.
  • Incense Sticks(Agarbatti)- Used for creating  a sacred atmosphere.
  • Kumkum, Haldi, Sandalwood Paste which is applied during prayers.
  • Betel leaves and areca nuts- Essential for offering to deities.

  • Women- Sarees, Bangles, and Bindis
